![]() De Bernières also takes the reader to the battlefields of various wars, revolutions and counterrevolutions, and portrays the Battle of Gallipoli from the Turkish point of view - although I don't think he captures the true extent of the horrors of Gallipoli.ĭe Bernières' dedicates his novel to: ".the unhappy memory of the millions of civilians on all sides during the times portrayed, who had become victims of the numerous death marches, movements of refugees, campaigns of persecution and extermination, and exchanges of population." The destruction of the Ottoman empire in WWI put an end to a tradition of religious and ethnic tolerance in Asia Minor, areas of the Balkans, and many Arab countries. Refugees fled in droves into the Ottoman Empire, to life in exile, trying to escape the killing fields. Similar ethnic and religious mass murders occurred in the Balkans, and other such slaughters were perpetrated by the Russians in their vast territory. Birds Without Wings is superb historical fiction which chronicles the rise of Turkish nationalism, following the horrific massacres of Armenians and Muslims in the 19th and early 20th century. Louis de Bernières intertwines his beautiful narrative of a small Anatolian town and the lives of its inhabitants with that of the biography of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder and first president of the Turkish Republic. ![]() ![]() "Man is a bird without wings, and a bird is a man without sorrow." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As it happens, I think it's top-notch (just as the cover thumbnail intimated to me), and it's the almost-ideal written counterpart to the DVD. Even if this graphic novel had turned out to be average, I think it would've been worth the purchase. I love well-done graphic novels, and while I'm a much more frequent browser of them than a buyer of them, I had to buy this when I bought the DVD ALEX RIDER: OPERATION STORMBREAKER. Should he fail, every child in England will be murdered in cold blood. The government has given him the technology, but only he can provide the courage. Finding himself in the middle of terrorists, Alex must outsmart the people who want him dead. But he is about to, and once he does, there is no turning back. What he doesn't know yet is that his uncle was killed while on a top-secret mission. ![]() But when fourteen-year-old Alex finds his uncle's windshield riddled with bullet holes, he knows it was no accident. He wasn't wearing his seatbelt, they said. They told him his uncle died in an accident. For existing fans of the series, this graphic novel will be a must-have for those yet to discover Stormbreaker, this will be the perfect introduction. Alex Rider is now an IMDb TV/Amazon Original Series! The mission that started it all-now in a graphic novel format! The first in the # 1 New York Times bestselling Alex Rider series, Stormbreaker, in a brand-new format, with bold, edgy, manga-like illustrations that bring Alex Rider to life in a way not seen before. ![]() ![]() ![]() A helpful and/or enlightening book that combines two or more noteworthy strengths, e.g. ![]() presents the latest findings in a topical field and is written by a renowned expert but lacks a bit in style.ħ – Good.
